Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As a Systems Engineering Degree Apprentice you change placements every six months to get a feel of all the different areas. Every day could be a bit different depending on your team, but usually involves emails, meetings and the tasks you are currently assigned.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I do enjoy the apprenticeship programme as I can also get involved with extracurricular activities, stretches, alongside career fairs and STEM events whilst undertaking my day to day job.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Alongside the new skills you learn within systems engineering you also develop your personal and professional behaviours and skills through normal day to day activities. Additionally you can get involved with workshops and training courses which develop these behaviours and skills further.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The programme is well structured with dedicated Early Careers or college staff on hand to help out with any issues or questions both within the company, but also at the Training Provider.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
As the programme is structured well it is unlikely you need large amounts of support, but if this is needed their is always someone nearby to help. There are also dedicated support programmes company wide that apprentices can make use of.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
As part of the programme you are with the training provider for one day a week where you undertake lectures relevant to your qualification. There is also a dedicated assessor within the college who supports with any apprenticeship questions/concerns you may have.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
Generally the increases knowledge of engineering theory and skills can support within the business, but it is more the report writing and project management skills which are helpful. Systems Engineering is a broad subject area whereas the course is heavily based on the electronic discipline.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Alongside the stretches, career fairs, and STEM events described above, the sites also have a social committee who organise regular social events and sport clubs that apprentices can get involved with.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It is such a large company with something for everyone. The programme is organised well and their is lots of support on hand if needed.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
I suggest showing that you participate in extracurricular activities outside of you normal school or home life. This can be schools clubs all the way through to personal projects or external sports clubs.
