Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Writing software requirements, designs, implementation, testing and maintenance. I often find myself working on an existing codebase, updating the specification in accordance to set requirements. Most of my work is related to aircraft systems.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

My programme offers a good work-life balance, allowing multiple days for off the job training. The work I do is meaningful and enjoyable - projects I work on are still used and important to teams even after changing placements.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Yes, absolutely. I have made significant progress in developing my programming skills, but also other skills such as speaking, networking, English, maths, IT. My training provider teach a broad range of skills in systems analysis, cyber security, programming, testing and much more. Software engineering is much more than just programming, the skill ceiling is infinite.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

My programme is very well organised, with both of my skills coaches are always offering their extended support and guidance throughout the apprenticeship. Learning is completed by an external education provider who frequently communicate with the company to make improvements.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I feel well supported in my role, working alongside experienced colleagues who are happy to assist and provide their knowledge when I need help. If work or university is falling behind, there are always paths offered to get back on track.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

My training provider offers several lab and support sessions with lecturers always responding quickly. The work provided in the lectures and labs really do help with completing assignment and examination work. I am happy with my training provider and sufficient support is provided.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My training providers work links directly to the apprenticeship specification and my day to day role. I feel as though I have gained significant knowledge from my training provider which helps me understand professional ways of working and standards.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes, my work has several facilities to offer such as a football team, gym membership perks and many opportunities to go away on company business to attend networking events and conferences.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I enjoy my role and have a good work-life balance. I don't have to worry about going into debt, paying for a university course as my employer covers all of the costs. There is no requirement for overtime on the apprenticeship and placement managers often let you take your time to research and complete work, providing guidance when something can be improved. The atmosphere is very friendly and professional.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Research the company, what we do and find out about projects you might be interested in. Always put your best into the entire recruitment process, and most importantly, research the job role you are applying for and ensure that aligns with the career you desire.
