Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
My role involves commissioning pieces of equipment on board ships, writing risk assessments etc. My role is a mix of both office based work as well as practical work. As part of the apprenticeship, I attend city of Glasgow college where I will complete a HNC and HND in marine engineering.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy my apprenticeship as I get along well with the people I work with. The people are encouraging and are always there to help if I have an questions or issues.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learned a range of new skills from my time in the business. Some of these include IT skills, practical skills as well as communication skills. My IT skills have developed as a result of office based tasks. I developed practical skills when in the college workshop and also on board the ship. My communication skills have developed as a result of speaking to new people within the yard and from different companies.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
There have been a few issues with the structure of the apprenticeship as a result of college strikes etc. However, as a whole the apprenticeship has been well structured.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive great support from my employer as they always make clear they are there to help if needed. I would feel comfortable approaching my line manager if i felt like i needed extra support in any area.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
I receive good support from the training provider when working towards my qualification but there was not very much support during strikes. This resulted in us having to attend college extra days towards the end of the first year in order to complete the course.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
My qualification will help me perform better in my role by giving me some practical knowledge along with theory.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are different clubs, social events at work often. These have been useful for getting to know other individuals within the workplace.
