Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
4 days a week in placement immersed in a team, 1 day a week in college completing the degree. Daily tasks are generally either progression of large projects, or smaller recurring tasks. These can be both for internal stakeholders, or working with suppliers or customers.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
The program is beneficial and I enjoy it, especially as rotating placements keep things exciting. There is a lot of pressure from balancing work and college which can lessen enjoyment on occasion, however this is not really significant in my enjoyment of the scheme in my opinion.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt many skills, especially around team based working, project management, and in engineering practice.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The structure at college is generally well thought out, and we've had visibility of the modules to be completed from day 1.
In work, there is a 6 month rotation structure in place, however at least in my experience, this has been malleable to account for exciting opportunities or apprentice needs. There is a support structure for apprentices in place also, with regular meetings with skills coaches to ensure wellbeing and attainment remains on track.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
My employer is generally quite supportive, especially in the early careers department. This is specifically clear in the support they have given me to attend 'stretch activities', which develop apprentices and count towards off the job hours (including large conferences, STEM Ambassadorship). There is several effective wellbeing schemes in place within the business, and academic support is offered. There has also been support for several local community based (volunteering) opportunities which apprentices have benefited from,
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
The college is supportive where assistance is required, and schemes such as HELMS (higher education learning mentor scheme) and pre submissions for assignments further assist in this.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
It often becomes very apparent that what you have learned in college provides strong assistance in carrying out your role. Therefore I would say its strongly beneficial.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
Whilst several opportunities (Scout Network, climbing club, leisure centres) were advertised in induction, there is no specific work provisions. There is occasionally socials organised by the apprentice councils.

Yes
Why?
I believe the experience of an apprenticeship in this company has set me up for a strong career, that the scheme is well structured and considered, and that the education provision is suitable. Additionally, the support given for achieving off the job hours and other activities is great.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Be enthusiastic about what the company does, and the impact you can make on national security. Also, take every opportunity given to you, and aim to maximise your apprenticeship experience.
