Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

The role is to maintain and fix robots and systems, but currently I am in college full time to learn the skills and knowledge so that I am fully qualified to work in the plant. The college involves me learning units like PLC's and machinery as well as college theory 1 day a week.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I find the program extremely enjoyable as it allows me to enhance my skills and being able to utilise my knowledge to fix problems. The situations when i require to use my problem solving skills are always good as they allow me to use the knowledge i have gained to find the problems.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

While studying in the college, I have learnt how to program PLC's, program micro controllers, learn more about electrical theory, as well as health and safety. I have learnt a lot at the factory where there are many systems working to run an automated line using robots, conveyers and a lot more.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

In the factory the plan for how you move around to learn the place is fairly relaxed to allow you to move to areas you feel will motivate you to work better and learn the most you can. These placements can be very useful to learning many parts of the company.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

The employer helps us with any problems we have within the workplace or in the college and keeps track of our progress periodically to ensure we are getting the work done and not falling behind.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

When working for our foundation degree, James watt college struggled to accommodate us due to a lack of staffing or timetable mishaps. Although the course is running smoothly, there were too many issues before starting with instances of no tutor for a month and not being placed in a room which is needed for the work.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

A lot of the qualifications is theory based and mostly used on a smaller scale. A critical subject is PLCs where we use considerably in the plant and is a great skill to have as a technician to help streamline breakdowns by reducing call outs to specialists. Another critical subject is also health and safety as it is very important in my role.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are always charity events that include mountain challenges, football matches and other sort of sports and leisurely activities. There are also separate sport matches that are not official from BMW but are organised within to be done after work. At the start of the apprenticeship, new apprentices go to skern lodge with all other new apprentices from BMW group and do many activities to team build.

Why?

This company is extremely beneficial to anyone who joins as there are many perks to joining, as well as the qualifications you receive at the end of it. The job is almost definite based on your performance in the theory and it gives a lot of room to improve your qualification.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group UK?

Make sure that you research the company and know why you want to join the company, what is your motivation to join. Stay calm in the interviews and make sure that you talk confidently to the team or the interviewer and contribute as much as you sensibly can. Even if you mess up, don't think it is over, because sometimes they are seeing how you react to your mistake to see how good you are under pressure.
