Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I work at AstraZeneca Mon-Thurs and spend Friday focussing on university studies. My role is being an apprentice within the Bioanalysis team, where my primary responsibility is to measure the concentration of drugs in biological samples. This role is a blend of laboratory and office work – usually, the first half of my day is spent independently conducting sample analysis in the lab. In the afternoon, I focus on analysing the data and reporting the findings to the project lead. My schedule also includes attending various meetings throughout the day.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
This experience has been incredibly exciting for me. From day one, I've enjoyed every moment and embraced new challenges. I've learned so many new skills and absolutely love being in the workplace. It's great to be saving money while gaining essential skills as a laboratory scientist and seeing a bright future ahead of me gives me peace of mind. This program has really pushed me out of my comfort zone, and I'm so grateful for that.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Working as a Bioanalytical Scientist has really helped me develop many skills. I've become much more independent, and my problem-solving abilities, especially in high-pressure situations, have improved a lot. The way in which I balance work and university studies has definitely become more refined. I feel more confident speaking up in meetings now. I've picked up a lot of practical lab skills and really enjoy learning about the theory behind the exciting science I'm involved in.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The organisation of the program is perfect for me – I always have clear objectives, and a plan laid out for the months ahead. I'm constantly involved in projects and get the chance to work with various team members and other teams. Everything flows smoothly, and I never find myself without something to do.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I can’t fault the support that I receive from my line manager and mentor, especially whilst living with a chronic disease that affects me every day – they are incredibly understanding. If I need any extra time to work on a university project, they will happily allow this. They clearly want me to get the most of out my apprenticeship and I am so grateful for them! My team are also super friendly and will answer any questions I have.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I am on the Laboratory Scientist course at Northeastern University London, working towards a degree in Bioscience with Digital Technologies. I receive great support from the university, especially from my success manager and course leads. I have reviews with my success manger every eight weeks to catch-up and make sure I’m hitting my objectives. Additionally, due to my condition, I have a learning support plan put in place which allows me deadlines and extra time for exams and assignments. They are always available to email for any questions and respond quickly.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I learn lots of crucial theory during my university studies which helps me understand the why as a bioanalytical scientist in addition to soft skills. I am able to practice presentations with my training provide which gives me confidence to present at work. I keep my mathematical and writing skills up by continuously learning and completing assignment. I receive feedback which I can take onboard to help me professionally.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are countless networking events, and the building is built in such a collaborative day that networking is constantly happening. There is a plethora of social activities, I have played social football and netball and really enjoyed it. There is a free gym on site and many social outings and volunteering opportunities.
