Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My responsibilities as an apprentice is varied. As part of the litigation workstream, I often liaise with counsel and prepare bundles for hearings. I have also had the opportunity to draft various legal documents used in court proceedings like response forms. Via the advisory workstream, I often assist with researching various points of law by preparing research memos as well taking attendance notes during calls with clients. I also have had the opportunity to conduct initial reviews of client documents such as policies and contracts to ensure compliance with best practice.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The firm fosters a friendly and supportive environment where everyone genuinely wants to see you thrive. Colleagues are always willing to offer guidance and share their expertise, making it an enriching place to grow both personally and professionally and has made my experience truly enjoyable and fulfilling.

My research abilities have improved significantly, allowing me to efficiently gather and analyse legal information. Additionally, my drafting skills have been honed through the preparation of various legal documents and correspondence. Liaising with counsel and clients has also enhanced my communication and organisational skills, making me more adept at managing multiple tasks and deadlines.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The solicitor apprenticeship programme at DLA Piper is very well-organised, offering 8 rotations across different practice groups over the course of the 6 years, providing exposure to the firm' full range of legal services.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
The programme offers extensive support and is very well-organised.
My supervisor takes their role as both a legal and pastoral mentor seriously. Another plus is the amount of responsibility given to newcomers. Our programme sponsor maintains regular communication through monthly scheduled meetings during our rotations.
Beyond our immediate team and supervisor, everyone from trainees to the office managing partner has been approachable and supportive, helping us settle in and address any questions. Transitioning from A-Levels to the apprenticeship was smoother than anticipated, thanks to the comprehensive support provided.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
DLA Piper partners with the University of Law for the solicitor apprenticeship, granting us full access to ULaw's resources, including the on-campus library, personalised study skills sessions, and wellbeing support. Additionally, each of us is assigned a skills coach who visits our workplace every 10-12 weeks for one-on-one meetings with us and our supervisor. This regular interaction ensures consistent contact with the university and provides opportunities to address any concerns.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are plenty of extra-curricular activities to get involved in at our workplace. We have various community groups in London, including a charity committee that supports the London office's charity of the year through initiatives like Christmas raffles, bake sales, and more. Our social committee organises fortnightly drinks, providing a great opportunity to unwind and socialise with colleagues.
We also have internal people networks such as Mosaic, the firm’s racial and ethnic diversity network, which hosts various events like Lunar New Year celebrations, the Fast for a Day challenge, and subsequent Iftar event and Black History Month 2024: Reclaiming Narratives event. There are lots of activities to get involved in!
