Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Myself and other colleagues go out onto frigates and/or submarines and complete non destructive testing using various different methods such as Lazar Scanning, MPI and UT. We do checks on plates, welds, pipes to ensure that there are no cracks, inconsistencies and deficiencies within these materials.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really enjoy my programme as it is something that is really interesting and fun to learn about. Also, all of the NDT Senior Engineers always manage to include us in most jobs that they go out on so it is really helpful to know what work we will be doing once we have got our PCN (Personal NDT Certificate)

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I am quite a quiet person so when I first joined I was really quiet however the people who I work with and most of the people around the dockyard are very kind and welcoming so it was very easy for me to come out of my shell which was really nice to experience.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

It is well organised to an extent. To further elaborate on this, things such as the report system and how we gather the information from onboard and take it back to the office is good. However, communication within the different sectors of NDT could do with some improvements.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a huge amount of support from my employer. He is always emailing us apprentices making sure everything is going well in our new office and always asking if we need any more information/resources to revise for our first PCN Course coming up in April.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

We receive a huge amount of support also from out training provider up at Lavender International, especially about our course that's coming up in April. We have monthly reviews with them also which is really helpful as we can all see how we are coming along within our course as a whole.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I will be able to go out on MPI jobs with my other apprentice colleagues which will really help take some pressure off of the Senior NDT Engineers so that they can focus on the bigger jobs using harder techniques such as UT that take a while to complete.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yeah there are many extra-curricular activities to get involved with however I have not participated in any of the social activities however I have with the professional networking events. For example I went to one yesterday about our nuclear Sector and how it is going to be changing for the better in the near future.

Why?

There are a lot of opportunities that come from working at Babcock and I feel as though the community that it brings is also a very big part as to why I would recommend it.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Babcock International Group?

Just be yourself, Make sure you are somewhat knowledgeable in the Job you are applying for which shows ambition and conveys that you are ready to learn, and just go for it.
