Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
Taking calls from claimants to assist with enquiries and work on benefit cases resolving any issues that occur to help move the claim forward.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
2/5
It's been interesting but has taken far too long to complete considering it's only level 3 Customer Service.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
I have improved social skills providing telephony assistance on to claimants and learned a more in-depth understanding of Personal Independence Payment overall.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
The questions seem more targeted towards retail than a benefit which makes it harder to understand the required answer.
Also doing the apprenticeship one day per week makes it difficult to follow as you're chasing up where you left off the previous week.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
Other than when required to be on phones after a bank holiday, the DWP are fairly supportive when it comes to the apprenticeship.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
I've had 4 apprenticeship coaches over the time doing the apprenticeship. My current coach Rita Rutherford has helped understand and support me more over the past 4 weeks than all previous together. She's brilliant at the role.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
It helps understand how organisations operate and how important customer service is overall, but not necessarily helps me perform better in my role. There isn't as much opportunity as I originally thought there would be when joining the DWP, and the promotion process is quite bad.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
DWP provide a fair amount of team meetings for a various different subjects which you can join, although it seems to be very basic information. There are certain groups which do out of work events but I'm not a very social person when it comes to larger groups so mainly just observe the team meetings and don't get involved in the social events.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Department for Work and Pensions to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend working here as it's fairly flexible hours, but it's very cliquey in my current office and if your face doesn't fit within these cliquey groups you don't get offered the opportunities when they come around. It seems they have a large influence on your opportunity and progression.
Although my stats are always top it hasn't made any difference to progression and people who consistently underperform with low pass rates have progressed due to knowing people who already work here or being more sociable with said groups.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Department for Work and Pensions?
If you know someone in a higher grade who already works here, you will progress easier. It doesn't matter how much work you do or what skills you provide and if they say it's confidential, it's not.
