Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
I am a apprentice electrical fitter in Portsmouth. My first year I am in the SDC developing hand skills and academic knowledge. Learning all about Electrical and Electronics, whilst undertaking different courses such as health and safety. Looking forward to getting more hands on working when i go out onto the ships next year.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy the hours, this gives me time to see my loved ones and spend time with friends. I enjoy the flexibility of the course, my classmates who are all very kind and supportive. When I have had the chance to practice on electrical work and practical, I have enjoyed it and felt the more i do it, the better i get.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
During my apprenticeship so far I have developed good hand skills and knowledge on different aspects of my role. I still need more guidance and support with developing my skills and knowledge with electrical and electronics, this is due to not frequently practicing electrical work. Hope to gain further skills and knowledge in that department throughout my next 3 and half years.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
So far as an electrical fitter apprentice, my structure hasn't been the best so far. I feel we get told to start a course and new work, to then be told we are doing something completely different the next day. There is a lot of sitting around not doing much and I feel like there is a lot of wasted time, where we could be learning more about electrical and electronics. We are 6 months into the apprenticeship and we have hardly done any electrical work. So my skills and knowledge hasn't improved loads so I just hope it improves as the years go on. So i feel more confident and feel accomplished.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I feel the support at BAE Systems is good and everyone is very supportive and helpful.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
I feel we receive some support from my skills coaches but I feel we have a lot of self learning and days where we are sitting around not learning. So I wish we had more days being taught because I don't want to lose out on valuable time where I could be developing skills.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I am only in my first year so i haven't really experienced my role to its fullest yet but next year when i am out on the ships, i will hope to feel some sense of accomplishments when I complete tasks.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
I personally don't but there are activities we can take part in such as field gun event
