Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
2/5
Currently, I come into the Skills and Development Centre, sometimes we do practical tasks, other times we have exams or days where we study for exams.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
2/5
It's ok but I wanted to become a skilled electrical fitter / engineer, I fear that when I go for my practical experience I will just be running cable as essentially a labourer. We have also done work on engines which I find interesting but it's not really relevant to my course.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
I have developed hand tool skills, using saws, files, etc as well as learning to use machinery safely such as pillar drills and bandsaws.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
1/5
Not well, we have had our apprenticeship changed, which we didn't have much of a say about from Maritime Defence Engineering to Manufacturing Engineering which removed the level 2 aspect, we were thrown into the level 3 with no base knowledge. Fortunately I have a background with electrical work but others weren't so lucky. We have also had to do electrical units that involve mathematics but we are completing the mathematics unit later which makes no sense. Not great in my opinion.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
Depends on the type of support, I'm quite happy working here I just wish I could do more complex work and study and the work was more electrically focused.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
Good support
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I haven't really completed enough of the qualification to say for sure.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Field Gun

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
No
Why?
I'm an older apprentice and I've found that some members of staff treat me like a child even though I'm well behaved, punctual and on time etc. I also haven't learned any electrical knowledge at a reasonable rate until a new teacher came into the centre who has been very good. The organisation of things is not good, lots of downtime.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Be passionate and have an interest in the role you're applying for.
