Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As a machinist technician, we will run the machines in the Machining line, and ensure that the machines are working correctly. Currently, in our first year, we are at full time college, five days a week, every day being dedicated to a full day's worth of a specific subject.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I thoroughly enjoy my programme, as not only have I developed my skills, I've also developed as a person, such as my social skills blooming. I have had to meet many people, and have learnt how to navigate the engineering industry, getting a foot in the door I never would have been able to otherwise, if not for this programme. i have learnt so much, and appreciate the opportunity I have.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt many new skills, as when I first started my apprenticeship, I had no skills or experience in electrics at any point, and had to learn everything from the basics. Despite this, I have progressed fast and far. Similarly, there are many subjects overall that I had no previous history with, but have learnt a lot about. I had previous experience in the Lathe, but have continued to develop my skills, learning tasks and activities that I had no idea existed before.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme I am involved in is structed very well, but isn't very well efficient in carrying out their plans. The college we are with struggles to organise the teachers well, though the fault mainly lies with the lack of teachers in engineering. The company I am with is much more proficient in organisation, always ensuring that we have tasks to do when we have to come into plant during the college closure days.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a thorough amount of support from my employer, as they encourage us to speak to them when we struggle and need help, consistently reminding all of us that if there are any issues, that we should reach out and speak to them. We have regular meetings with our manager where we can speak about our issues with anything they can help with.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
My training provider supports us plenty in our endeavour to complete our qualifications, as the tutors themselves are always eager to support us and help when we are struggling. The managers and directors of the college are always there to lend a hand if we have questions with our programme. Whilst there is always room for improvement, they consistently show support.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The qualification that I am achieving through our training provider is very active in my knowledge when at work and therefore in my role. It allows me to understand how exactly the machines I will work on function, and therefore how I can maintain and run them. When I spend days at work, I can see on a walk through the machining line components I wouldn't have understood without this qualification. As such, without the qualification, I wouldn't be able to function in my role to my highest performance.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There is many extra-curricular activities that we can get involved in, such as a charity team, and every Wednesday there is a football match at Plant, where anyone can get involved. There are always opportunities to network and support any charities, even if you are not apart of the charity teams themselves.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BMW Group UK to a friend?
Yes
Why?
BMW Group has been very helpful to me, supporting me in the very beginning of my career, allowing me to get a head start and a foot in the door that I don't believe I would have got anywhere else. I have met many people, and come so far from the person that I was at the very start of the apprenticeship, and I cannot wait for how I continue to develop from the apprenticeship in the next three years with BMW Group. I fully support anyone who wants to join BMW Group, and would recommend this apprenticeship programme with no hesitation to those who ask.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group UK?
I would advise that you are honest in every step of the application, as it allows the employer to see you as you are, and not who you pretend to be. When you are dishonest about who you are, you are putting higher expectations on yourself that wouldn't have been there otherwise. Be confident in yourself and your abilities. Hold your head high and be truthful about how you feel and who you are.
