Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As the change coordination intern I had a variety of responsibilities and opportunites throughout the year. My main role responsibilities were creating and sending build lists to our stakeholders for correct car builds, managing department housekeeping audits, updating data sheets etc.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, when sending off these build lists, issues may have arose which I had to handle and communicate to the correct departments to sort it within the agreed time frame.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have developed strong effective communication, better presenting skills, time optimisation and work prioritisation, managing projects.
New skills consist of automation and digitalisation, i created and rolled out a connected workspace app for my department. Also managing other team members attitude or motivation to work, tasks or projects you're steering.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Support and Guidance was consistently offered to me throughout my placement, but I think this may been due to the manager of my department, not all interns were supported like I was. Like any placement, it's important for you to speak up if you want more work or to be more involved in the team, I had to do this after feeling lost in the team workload but this was then discussed with team leaders.

How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The general atmosphere is great, everyone is friendly and is keen to help out.
The company culture is similar but slightly lost within the variety of departments, each team have a different attitude to helping out stakeholders etc. Our team took responsibility for problems, keen to find solutions to problems and were generally authentic. But some other teams would be secretive with their work and cause issues for our team, coordinating changed into assembly.
It's also a very male heavy business, as a female intern I noticed the different dynamic and behaviour that I worked in.
A majority of the employees have started as an apprentice and have been moving jobs internally, due to this they automatically have the knowledge to approach situations, this is sometimes forgotten from them that they have this advantage. Causing those who aren't embedded in the BMW Group culture to struggle from knowledge gaps and asking questions which may seem obvious to them becomes a burden.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement year, I had a great team who I had a great time with. We went on team days out of the office and could have a laugh in stressful situations.
It is key to note that your experience depends on what you put into it, I spoke up to receive more work and projects to work from. From this I was able to go out and network with wider departments and have connections to help me throughout the year, some interns didn't take this approach and found themselves bored with the basic daily tasks.
I enjoyed the freedom of an intern as well, as long as you bring purpose from your projects or ideas, you're welcome to work on anything you'd like. From automating your daily tasks, setting up new team weekly meetings to help efficient build list creation, or helping other teams develop their systems.
