Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
The 1st year is situated entirely at college, other than half terms where we go into plant. At college we learn alot of different things, ranging from hydraulics, to Business Improvement Techniques to PLC. I came into my apprenticeship not being able to define some of the lessons, now I am experienced within these fields, and feel comfortable to talk about and carry my work out in these. It is a different lesson every day, as well as Thursdays, being Btec day where it is more of a theory/academic based day.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I enjoy my work very much, I like the change I've undergone since leaving school, the new experiences and friends I have made as well as the new skills I have acquired. However, the bit I find most gruelling being freshly 17, is the travel to and from college, although the reward of the salary and the skills I have learnt keep me going.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt a lot of new skills, mostly within the field of engineering, acquiring a multitude of skills from improving my dexterity in Bench, my problem solving within Business Improvement Techniques and my mathematical skills on BTEC days within maths and mechanical principles. Alongside this, I have developed personally, with my confidence and ambition since starting in August.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
Despite major setbacks on the training providers behalf regarding timetables and tutor absence, I have learnt many skills that I attribute to overcome the obstacles chucked in the way. I do think that full time in college is a bit much, and would like to spend more time in plant learning more skills more specific to my field.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
I do feel that support is there from my employer, but due to my self, I do not take advantage of the aid provided by my company. I have struggled in the past few months with my maths skills and the exhaustion of travelling, but after having a chat with my boss, I know now that there is support there in place for me.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
I am very much supported by my training provider, as in the more practical lessons, they have taught me all I need to know, in lessons such as Bench, BIT and Milling. However, I feel I could use more support from the tutors within my BTEC lessons, as that is where I struggle most.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
In my role in metrology, I haven't learnt much to do with my specific role, despite learning to read some measuring equipment such as Vernier Callipers and Micrometers. However, I have learnt skills invaluable to me when I am put on placement, and how the engine works, giving me a firm understanding of what I will be doing at work.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
I believe there are extracurricular activities in the workplace, such as a football team on a Wednesday. I have also attended a couple of schools to do a talk, consisting of four assemblies and a kahoot, and another school, where we did a Question and Answer with a handful of students.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BMW Group UK to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would highly recommend BMW to a friend as it is a great experience, especially going straight from school into an apprenticeship, it may be a bit daunting at first as it was for me, but you are going into an industry with like minded people. It has great benefits such as a car scheme and a great pension.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group UK?
The best advice I can give for the interview process and the presentation is to be as honest as possible. My presentation was on something I was proud of, and I did it on something I took pride in and it was really easy, it was like having a chat with friends. I'd also say if you're coming straight from school or cant drive, is to be prepared for all the travel that takes place.
