Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role is general engineering however my current placement is in ECAD. I am currently working on training boards to develop my skills in the placement of components on a PCB and the routing of these components. I am also becoming more familiar with the software that is used.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

For the most part, I enjoy the progress of designing PCBs however for the larger boards it can start to feel a bit repetitive after a while leading to a decrease in motivation.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have developed my skills in the placement of components making sure to keep components that are connected close together and making use of all of the space provided. In doing this it makes routing a lot more efficient.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

I think that the programme is structured well due to the 3 month rotational placements in different departments of the business. This will allow me to gain a greater understanding of what each engineering discipline entails and how all these disciplines come together.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a lot of support from my employer. There is always someone that I can approach with an issue and then that issue is usually resolved fairly quickly. I have daily interactions which allow me to raise any concerns with my line manager.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I receive a fair amount of support from my training provider. There is a lot of useful resources that are provided however due to the learning being carried out remotely it makes support a lot harder.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I feel that the majority of the learning that I am doing through the qualification I am working towards does not currently apply to my current placement in ECAD however in future it will become useful.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are a lot of STEM events and other stretch opportunities that are available to me to take part in that will develop my knowledge in areas outside of my role.

There is a wide range of opportunities for everyone, ensuring that you can find a role that suits you. The work is also very fulfilling as it is challenging whilst also being rewarding.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Make sure to get involved in as many extra opportunities that are available to you as it is a great way to gain knowledge of what goes on inside the business and also a great networking opportunity.
