Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
An example of what my role involves is, subcontractor management and monitoring for earthworks, completing quality surveys. While in drainage, I set out drainage runs onsite with the GPS or Total station, providing levels, positions and problem solving to ensure the drainage is placed correctly.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I very much enjoy the programme, I love going to university on block release, to learn the theoretical side of engineering and have the university social life. But also going to work and learning hands-on skills and knowledge that you are not exposed to at university.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt a vast amount of skills since starting such as problem solving with different teams to tackle clashes onsite, which has in turn increased my confidence and communication skills. I have improved my organisation by planning everyday activities, and adaptability when situations change.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The university have a set 5 year teaching schedule covering a wide range of engineering modules, and Skanska offer many training programmes to uplift my skills.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
Skanska is very helpful and supportive, constantly hosting meetings and events for the apprentices. My line manager supports me with weekly check up meetings to discuss both work and university, and any issues that I have. While my team adapt to my university timetable and support me with assignments.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
I have meetings with my tutor and line manager every 3 months to monitor my progress with work, university and ICE to help me keep on track. My tutor also meets in person when I attend university to check on our wellbeing and progress.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
A lot of the modules align with what I have to do at work, so it is great for solidifying theoretical knowledge from the university with the practical at work.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
In our Skanska office the engineering team do monthly dinner socials, there is a weekly football team and a Curry club available for people to socialise. Likewise Skanska's Emerging Talent team organise networking events for apprentices and graduates to learn soft skills.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Skanska to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The people I work with are very friendly, there is a real family feels and everyone is happy to help you. There is a strong sense of collaboration and good support for the apprentices.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Skanska?
Apply early, keep an eye out for apprenticeship adverts and apply straight away. The assessment day is not stressful at all, everyone is very friendly, so be yourself and show off your skills. Do not be afraid to ask questions and be curious, you are doing this programme to learn.
