Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am in my first year of the apprenticeship, and I go to North star college 5 days a week. We get some half term off, however we also get to shadow older apprentices sometimes, which is great fun, and you get to try so many new things. It is a lot of college work, however you can easily get it all done during college and self study hours. We come into our workplace one morning a week to complete college work and catch up with coworkers and our manager.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I love my apprenticeship, and I truly believe that this is one of, if not the best apprenticeships out there. It has helped my develop myself so much and has been the best thing that has happened to me. The team at work has helped me through tough times with counselling, and my manager has sorted out every problem we have as soon as she could.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt many new skills since staring this apprenticeship, including welding, milling, turning and many more. We have also done lots of work on hydraulics and pneumatics, which will be very useful when we are in the workplace more often. There are many things to learn about, and anyone you ask a question to in the workplace will get you an answer, or find you someone who can.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The program is very well structured. In your first year, you go to college full time to gain all the knowledge you will need for the workplace. In the second year, you do placements around the plant with different people, which helps grow your understanding of the workplace, and you still go to college 1 day a week to get education. In the third year you are on placement full time, and get self study time allocated to do your End Point Qualification work. In the 4th year, you can either stay in work, or choose to do a level 4, which helps grow your knowledge more and helps you get a higher position within the company.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a lot of support from my employer, including free counselling I go to due to mental health issues. My manager has always been available to call or text whenever I have had any issues, and my coworkers have been very helpful when going through rough times. Overall I am very grateful to everyone who has helped me so much so far.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive a lot of support, and my manager is always asking if there is any way she can help. We have had lots of support from other apprentices and plant workers too, who have given us jobs to do for assignments, and have also helped us to wire it down.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I feel like the training that new college provide will be very helpful in the workplace. We have learnt many things, including pneumatics, which will be useful in plant as many of our systems involve this. We have also learnt about PLCs, which are another big part of our workplace.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are many activities to join in with. The plant regularly host events such as family days and sport matches. There are also things such as newsletter teams, charity champions and conservation teams, which all help the environment or our charity, which is currently teenage cancer trust. You can also apply for a program to go to other countries.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BMW Group UK to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It is a great employer, and has so many great opportunities, which all are available for apprentices. These opportunities help you grow as a person, and can develop your skills and teach you about different parts of the processes you wouldn't normally see. You can go to other countries and all sorts.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group UK?
It is a long process, however it is rewarding, and a great opportunity. You shouldn't say no if you get offered it. It can be scary coming in on your first day, however it is okay as everyone else if feeling the same way. You get to do so many cool things, which are all great things for young people to do.
