Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Review, maintain and write code for a backend development team. Work with data processing operations as well as visualising and explain work done to those less experienced with the software/code. Communicate with our customers (other teams) to find an efficient automated solution to their problem.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
At the moment, work is good, as I have mostly been getting trained. For actual tasks, I have received lots of support, but also appreciated the challenge of being thrown into the deep end. The only let down is the OTJ logging system (Aptem), which is primarily a university issue.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I've become experienced with CAD, specifically Catia V6. I've also become rather familiar with Tableau, Tableau Prep, Google BigQuery. Learnt Python, C#, and SQL skills. I've gained much more confidence with presenting myself and my work in a professional setting, as well as communicating in this setting.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The uni have issues with Aptem, the OTJ logging system. It's very difficult to log things, and unclear what we counts as OTJ/what we should log. The system also is broken and won't let us log KSBs. Coursework has been posted with the incorrect submission dates too once.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I have multiple people in my team I can reach out to for support, as well as multiple people across the business. My line manager, and team leads, are all invested in my growth and are very generous with allowing us to do university work if we need more time.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Lots! Every Friday is a study day, and, provided we don't have a lot of work and provide enough notice, my team lead is happy to allow us to use some work time for university work if needed. They also give us work that can relate to our current university projects (eg. I was given SQL related work when studying databases).
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Not much, work can use rather specific coding languages (or versions of it). Some modules at university will be irrelevant until after the course (management modules, mostly) but they tend to give you a good idea of the fundamentals or logic behind concepts. I assume it gets more specific as the course goes on.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
There is an Early Careers Social channel, which host events like balls, hikes, pub quizzes, and sports teams. I have been to a few, and enjoy them, but they are mostly populated by graduates so they're not always useful to socialise.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Really positive and supportive work environment, where people are willing to listen and respond to your concerns and feelings. Your training is supported, and your presence feels valued (even if you personally feel you aren't yet qualified). Managers are very eager to train the apprentices and this positive attitude shows.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
Express yourself - don't assume JLR want another copy and paste corporate person.
Show passion for your interests and take opportunities to perform tasks and ask meaningful questions where possible.
Express your concerns or worries, as there will almost always be someone to speak to or to remedy the problem.
