Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My role at Arup depends on the project I am working on which typically involves working with different teams and using tools like Python and Power BI. I work on a range of software development, data analytics and data science projects for a variety of clients, including internal projects for Arup, National Highways, and the Environment Agency.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I personally love my apprenticeship programme. Both my job and study have provided so many opportunities that I wouldn't have otherwise experienced. I love the variety of projects I get to work on and the structured learning provided by my qualification. I have particularly enjoyed working on my synoptic/work based project where I have been able to apply my learning in the workplace.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
My apprenticeship has helped me to develop both technical and soft skills. Prior to joining Arup, I didn't know how to code and now I am proficient in Python. I have also learnt how to use tools like Power BI and ArcGIS. My apprenticeship has also helped me to develop my presenting skills and leadership skills.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
My apprenticeship programme is well structured. I attend classes for one day per week in term time and this is communicated well in advance. There are no classes over the summer break but this is a great opportunity to focus on work and study additional things like certifications. The course runs over 4 years.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Arup is an excellent apprenticeship employer and provides plenty of support. I am supported by my team, line manager, Arup's Apprenticeship Manager and a range of others across the company. People are always happy to offer support. We also have study leave days and generally there is flexibility around study time.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Manchester Metropolitan University provides great support for their apprentices. Every student is assigned a skills coach who is always there to answer questions and provides day to day support. There are tripartite review meetings every 12 weeks which involves the employer, apprentice and skills coach and is a great opportunity to discuss progress and challenges. Lecturers and module leaders are very responsive by email and provide plenty of feedback throughout the course.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The qualification I am studying has certainly helped me in my role - especially the more technical units in the later years. I have been able to apply a lot of this in my role and have been able to find a synoptic/work based project that has allowed me to explore my interests.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are plenty of social activities at work - from a badminton club to regular social events in the office. I also attend a lot of professional networking events through the Association of Apprentices and other organisations. I am an Apprentice and STEM Ambassador and talk to students about STEM careers and opportunities.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Arup to a friend?
Yes
Why?
My experience as an apprentice at Arup has been incredibly positive. I have been able to explore my interests and specialise in a field I otherwise wouldn't have been aware of. Arup is an incredible environment to learn in and both the people and the projects are fantastic. I would highly recommend it.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Arup?
My number one tip for all aspiring apprentices is to be enthusiastic and willing to learn. I'd advise researching your favourite Arup project to talk about in the application process. Try to understand the role you're applying for and additionally think about the skills you'd want to develop.
