Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I am a crystallisation scientist working developing Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). The role entails performing crystallisations and analysing the material that you create. Analysis includes looking at the particle size, the form and the shape.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I very much enjoy both the work and university side of my programme. I find the university degree interesting and I enjoy learning the content. I have great support from both sides.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt how to present confidently about apprenticeships and my work in front of a large number of people. I have learnt numerous lab skills that I will be able to develop further and carry with me through out my career.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

My programme is well structured. I set clear goals with my manager and supervisor for both work and university and know how to work towards these. The university programmes is also very well structured with a clear timeline of what needs to be completed when with support from skills coaches.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a lot of support from my employer. I am challenged and supported to develop my knowledge and skills. I feel comfortable asking for support and I always receive it no matter what topic I am asking about. I also receive tutoring from work colleagues to help with university.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I have calls with my skills coach every 12 weeks. They provide support and help me track my progress and help me set goals. Lecturers are available to have calls or reply to emails for any queries about university work.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Some of the modules from university coincide with topics I am learning within my role. This helps me understand the theory behind techniques further as university cover certain topics deeply. At university residentials, I am able to learn lab techniques that I don't use within work.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are multiple societies to get involved. I am involved in organising events for the AstraZeneca social society which include social events outside of work. I am part of apprentice netball team and there are many networking events within work for various different reasons.
