Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My projects will each require the employ of various different software, mathematical and abstract thinking skills; these include the use of CAD softwares (such as AutoCad); Electrical Systems design software (such as Amtech) and simulation software (such as Dialux for lighting intensity). Moreover, critical thinking and abstract decision making in combination with mathematical assessments, such as maximum demand calculations, are consistently required to create an optimal solution to challenges with limited resources.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, to a degree. As a placement student, there is certainly less of a pressure/responsibility compared to a graduate student. This allows for the availability of a lot of time for training!

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
As a placement student, Arup was a great insight into the mechanisms of a corporate engineering consultancy firm; especially one with a unique ownership structure. My projects taught me skills that weren't apparent in my degree both in a software and an on-site practical sense.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I had enough guidance and support to manage to make the most of my time at Arup; I never felt like there were things that I had missed out on. However, managers are often project leads and senior members of staff in general; hence, its difficult to have a smooth line of communication without a lot of input.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Very positive; Arup is an excellent environment to balance career and personal lives since the ownership structure of the company supports this. Lots of very lovely people often more than happy to take time to help you and assist you. This response is very much proportional to the effort you put in. Very good funds available for social activities, company events and diversity initiatives! Great perks.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
Really loved it! Living in London for the first time is daunting but a great benefit of working in 8FA and 80CS (Arup London Buildings). I am impressed enough by the work, team and company culture to go back.

Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Arup
Be yourself, really consider the work that you might be taking on! The job doesn't pay as well as a Banking/Finance roll or even some other London-based engineering roles but the work/life balance has been a great trade off for this.
