Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
At the moment I am in college 5 days a week, to gain the basic knowledge of engineering. On a Monday, I am doing my BTEC lessons, which are, maths, health and safety, mechanical principles, electrical principles and business operations. On a Tuesday and Thursday I am in the mechanical workshop doing practical work. On Wednesday I am in the electrical workshop. On a Friday, I am in the library doing all my admin. I write up about what I got up to during the week to go towards my evidence and complete any assignments that need doing for BTEC.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy it very much so. I love the feeling of completing something like completing a task in the mechanical or electrical workshop and have made new friends with the other apprentices, which I’m sure will last a lifetime. I’m looking forward to what the future holds for me so that’s a very enjoyable feeling.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes, at the start of my apprenticeship I had no clue how to wire up something and make a circuit but now I do. Also in the mechanical side of things, I have built a tool box and many other things which is cool to see. I’m looking forward to learning new skills and developing the ones I have now.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
Very well organised. My manager and he was an apprentice in the same shoes as me not long ago, so he knows what challenges I might face and he has helped me overcome these challenges by being very supportive. He keeps me updated with what’s going on in the airport by sending regularly emails to us saying what we need to be doing and what’s going on.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
A lot. I explained what support I receive in the previous question.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
A lot. The staff at the college are extremely experienced and experts in engineering, so they have been great coaches to helping me learn more about engineering and showing me what different tools and equipment do and how to safely operate them.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
At the start of my apprenticeship I didn’t have a clue on how to do some of the stuff, however, I have a very good understanding of what is expected from me as an engineer.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
No, however, me and the other apprentices went out for a Christmas works do and that was a very fun experience, getting to bond with them outside of work.
