Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Currently my role involves working in a lab on a sterile production plant for a majority of the day processing environmental and personnel monitoring of cleanrooms. This includes the receipt of plates and reading. Reading is checking for any growth that may have occurred and deciding how to progress it.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I am studying towards a BSc (Hons) in Bioscience and so far the content has been very interesting and enjoyable - I have expanded my current knowledge as well as learning new content. Some people don't enjoy the additional Chemistry modules however I have found them challenging yet rewarding.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Skills such as using electronic systems commonly used within the company and becoming an expert in a way. Other microbiological skills such as streaking out, gram staining etc. I have developed existing skills such as collaboration/ teamwork, communication and problem solving - I would say my confidence has continued to improve.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

Modules structured well, content is usually released weekly and sometimes a few days before your study day which is beneficial as you can fit studying around your routine. With lab science pathway a yearly residential is held where there is opportunity for lab practicals and uni social events in Manchester.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Support ranges from development and growth in work to finding a tutor for more difficult modules. AZ is good at understanding the difficulty with balancing a degree and working life so extra support is given when asked for. The apprenticeship team is great and getting everyone involved in apprentice events.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

A good level of support is provided, however with the course being mainly remote work there is only opportunity to speak to tutors every 2 weeks (on a whole) otherwise email is the route of contact. Unfortunately most tutors don't provide extensive feedback on assignments/exams, you have to be proactive to seek this. MMU is understanding of the fact that an apprentice also works 4 days a week so support is well suited.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The degree has 2 microbiology units in the first 2 years so this is aligned very well and has benefited performance and understanding in my role. Some modules aren't particularly relevant to my current role but I am able to see how they relate to the company. Other modules may be less relevant to AZ however they are still interesting and improve other skills such as scientific writing.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Although I am not currently a part of any sport/ social activities there are some available. There is lots of opportunity for networking, especially for an apprentice these can also be structured so that they are less intimidating and in a relaxed environment by the apprenticeship team and other apprentices.

AZ is a great company to work for, with unique and desirable benefits and salary. Most people are happy and friendly with a strong sense of teamwork across site. There is lots of opportunity and space for your growth and development and managers are supporting of this.
