Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My role as a QS can vary depending on my job for the day, from working in pre construction, to project surveying to final accounts, no day is the same as the last. Cost control and sub-contract package management are some of the key responsibilities of a QS
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
My apprenticeship programme is very enjoyable, the on site experience, paired with study leave makes for a great first job experience, teaching you about the importance of teamwork and great communication.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
My skillset has majorly improved since joining BAM, I feel more confident as every day goes on, communicating with different colleagues of all ranking levels. Working on site in a live environment pushes you to get your work done on schedule so the job doesn't experience any delays.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My apprenticeship is very well structured in my region. In their first two years, as well as study leave, you are sent round on rotations working within different teams that are not directly associated with your apprenticeship, for example, a site management or planning rotation. These rotations teach you about everyone else's roles within the industry and how each job links into the next.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
BAM are great for supporting apprentices throughout their journey, there is an early careers team who focus on your wellbeing and ensuring you are getting the best apprenticeship experience possible, this paired with line and matrix managers who work in your local region to manage your day to day work ensuring you are getting the right exposure from the industry to learn from.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I attend college blocks for my apprenticeship study, the direct support from my college is just as good as my employer, all of the staff are extremely friendly and helpful, they focus on ensuring that we are completing all of our work to the highest standard possible, looking to teach us skills we can take into our site placements.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The content taught in my college block has a direct relation to the industry. The modern content is taught by industry professionals who also have a background in various roles within the construction industry. Their experience can help all apprentices to better understand the content we are being taught by using real life examples and experience from industry professionals.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
BAM runs a sports and social club in each region that hosts a variety of events across the year, some including sports tickets, show/concert tickets, arts and crafts and much more. As an apprentice you are able to organise your own events, as I have hosted a golf day for all staff. BAM also runs Future BAM, which organises events such as site tours, health and safety events and much more for all staff in BAM.
