Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
In my role as an apprentice, I engage in daily research and journal reviews to remain updated on technological advancements. I process data and conduct statistical analyses to derive insights that help with decision-making. Additionally, I am developing apps to enhance scientists' efficiency and integrating new technologies to improve existing workflows.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I thoroughly enjoy my program, as it offers numerous learning opportunities both at university and work. This flexibility allows me to choose projects that align with my interests and goals.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Throughout my apprenticeship, I have significantly improved my coding skills in Java, Python, and R. I've gained a deeper understanding of biological data processing, with a specific emphasis on genomics. I've learned various techniques for analysing biological data and successfully implemented machine learning algorithms tailored to this type of data.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The company side of the program is very well-structured, with a dedicated team supporting apprentices and management that ensures a balanced approach between study and work. However, the university component could improve, as in-person study weeks lack the flexibility offered by online study options available in other apprenticeships, which would allow for a less intense study schedule and did not lead to burn-out.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive substantial support from my company, including the apprentice committee, my manager, and my mentor. I have weekly meetings with my manager for updates and workload check-ins. Additionally, I am encouraged to reach out for help and support whenever needed.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
The university provides significant support through PhD students and lecturers during lectures and practicals, facilitated by small class sizes for easy interaction. However, they tend to address issues only after they occur, rather than proactively preventing them as they were raised as a concern from a student.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
The qualification enhances my understanding of data concepts relevant to my work. However, as someone with a technical background, the course didn't advance my knowledge of Python, Java, R, or SQL.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Work offers diverse opportunities for engagement, including journal clubs and an apprentice journal club for building presentation skills. The social committee, managed by apprentices, organizes activities like outings for drinks, dinners, board games, etc. Additionally, work-related events such as National Apprenticeship Week, Networking Lunches, Coffee Mornings, Friday Morning Talks, Cake Clubs are frequently held, facilitating networking and collaboration.
