Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

i have been hired as a control engineer and as of this moment have not worked inside the plant but it will be PLC based. The day to day in college is to do the level 2 monday tuesday wednesday friday consisting of various subjects from hydraulics to bench and then on thursdays i work towards my degree in subjects like programming and analogue electrics

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

i enjoy nearly all parts of my program with both the theory and practical being enjoyable as it is all a new experience and i enjoy learning new skills. However, i sometimes do not enjoy how the college is run as there is very little communication between management and students.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

yes i have learnt how to file, drill , build hydraulic circuits and pneumatic circuits as well i as this i learnt how to operate a mill. in my degree i have learnt how to program in C+ and i have learnt ladder logic and graph for the PLC’s and i am going to try learning other language for PLC

How well organised/structured is your programme?

i do not think it is structured that well as it is not very flexible and the management is very late on doing time tables. that means some days my group does not know what we are doing it is normally after a half term and after that they get it back on a track a little, but overall not very well on the college side

How much support do you receive from your employer?

i receive lots of support from bmw they do check ups every week or every other week but we can text our employer if we have problems at any time and they will support us through it. there is a wide range of help and support on most subjects overall it is very good

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

the support from all the tutors is very good and they are always eager to help us learn. they are very good at supporting especially on the equipment new to people such as mills and lathe. They also help you with the theory side of the qualification helping steer you in the right direction without giving the answer

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

i am unsure how i can answer this i have not had much experience in the role as i have not been inside the plant yet. however i feel pre pared to start my role thanks to the college as i am now much more confident to enter the role

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

there is not many activities that i know of but that may change once i get into the factory, as for the college there is also not many as i have only heard of one which is for a football match in june. There is some networking events at bmw however

Would you recommend BMW Group UK to a friend?

Yes

Why?

because it is a very good place to work and a strong support group and systems in place for you to come in and learn. They also take on apprentices a lot of years so have experience in training apprentices for many years and will give you a good qualification.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group UK?

i think the main thing is to be eager to learn and this is a good trait for all apprentices as an apprenticeship is a way to learn applicable skills. i would also say to be confident and approach the interviews with confidence and honesty in my opinion this is the best things for any apprentice to do.
