Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Collaborating with other engineers and subcontractors in meetings and solving problems. Coming up with innovative ideas and plans to counter current issues and issues that haven’t occurred but could potentially be detrimental.Checking multiple GA’s and schematics and making sure all drawings are a true representation of what will be on site
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I enjoy working and I learn something new almost everyday at work. Being on site and linking drawings to what is actually existing and present on site is extremely useful and will definitely help me grow and understand my surroundings for future projects. University is quite difficult baring in mind it’s only one day a week and the rest of the week is work based. Can be difficult to find a balance between uni and work as I work more than I go to university but university is needed the most in order to qualify for work

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt multiple skills. I am comfortable with using digital platforms such as excel, word and PowerPoint. I am comfortable with putting together formal emails. I have learnt loads of abbreviations and acronyms that are used in the construction industry. I have developed my understanding on services and how they operate

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
I think that more days should be provided for university as university is definitely the most important as it actually provides the apprentice with the qualifications to work. For some apprentice programmes the structure is different but I am on a day release programme and it can be a struggle to balance work and university as work is too heavy over university
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
Loads of help and support is provided from colleagues and employers which is great and comforting from the perspective of a new apprentice. Having a good employer that actually wants to help is amazing as it makes the apprentice feel welcome and want to improve even more and try their best
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
Not much support is provided from my training provider at university. I believe my training provider left the university so I will be given a new trainer but it would be nice if the training provider could give suggestions on how to get the best out of university and ways of gaining a further understanding
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I think my qualification at university helps me at work to see the mathematical and scientific principles of my role at work. Somethings at university seem like they have absolutely no link to the real world of construction which can be frustrating and almost and draining to learn when there’s a lack of correlation
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are loads of extra curricular activities to get involved with at work. Bam is great at creating a wholesome work place and getting everyone involved in occasional activities such as sports and social events. It’s always good to have these events to create a bond with others you work with

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAM to a friend?
Yes
Why?
BAM is a great company and I am enjoying my time here. It is great to get an understanding of all the roles available in construction as it is highly likely there is a role for anyone. The day release programme can be quite tough at university but bam is a good company to work for
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
I would definitely say it’s best to just be yourself. If you try and portray someone you’re not just to get a job it won’t feel authentic. It’s always best to be yourself regardless of the situation and it is highly likely you will be liked and respected if you do so
