Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Working across different teams within HR, including strategy, business partnering, learning & development and HR Services. Each placement is very different, allowing me to build relationships across the large HR function at TfL as well as the wider business. Working directly with the business to solve HR problems daily.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoyed most aspects! TfL offer a great support network throughout the whole scheme, supporting with the EPA, placements and development sessions as well.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
YES! Learnt how to manage stakeholders varying in seniority; how to use our internal systems to gain data and insights on people problems; how to project manage and keep to deadlines; how to coach other members of staff in skills that I have learnt (for example using Microsoft apps like PowerBI)

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
A variety of placements are offered and you are allowed to choose where you go for most of them. Experienced placement managers support you in your placements and have regular check ins. One day a week is a study day to allow for us to complete all of our assignments on time.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Lots! There are plenty of people you can go to for support and advice, including a sponsor/ mentor, placement managers, buddies (previous apprentices) and the other people in your cohort.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
We had bi-weekly lessons with our training provider, and some constructive feedback was given. There were some assignments that were trickier than others and would have been beneficial to have more support, however I gained that extra support from my Sponsor and placement manager as they had supported other apprentices through the qualification before.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Some of the assignments were good for understanding the HR landscape, how organistions are designed etc. Some were not as relevant to the HR role I was doing. I felt that a lot of my learning came from on the job experience.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
YES! there are a few different sports teams (football, netball), colleague network groups - this is where people come together from across TfL to support eachother. There are a few different network groups, such as disability, women, race etc. We also have a Graduate, Apprentice & Intern Committee who organise networking events, socials and knowledge sharing sessions throughout the year.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Transport for London to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Such a supportive organisation, everyone is so approachable and helpful, I have felt welcomed in every team I have worked in, the work life balance is great, there are many other benefits as well (such as free travel in London, discounts on many shops/ entertainment).
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Transport for London?
Look at TfL's vision and values - do they align with your own values? Understand that TfL is a HUGE organisation - there are jobs in so many different areas, not just London Underground, for example finance, HR, project management, sustainability and green skills, innovation.
