Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Looking after the core Operational Technology systems that allow the business to monitor and control the high voltage electrical network. This includes the maintenance and improvement of these systems and implementing changes to alter the functions as required by the business.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The Project Management aspect of the programme was poorly organised due to the impact COVID had on the delivery. I also struggled to relate to the course content due to the nature of my job not having a direct interaction with projects during the course.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

From the apprenticeship I have learnt how to better handle stakeholder engagement when it comes to the projects I am now involved with.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme was well structured with set placements revolving around different business areas to gain experience with a wide variety of teams.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Support was limited and relied heavily on myself to make contact with new business areas for my next placement with structure being poorly agreed.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

A large amount of support was available in the runup to the exam which helped greatly with revision, and allowed weaker knowledge areas to be focused on.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification has had a small positive impact on my role as I better understand the background workings of the projects I am involved in, but my role does not required me to directly manage and projects of my own.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are opportunities to attend conferences to gain understanding of the wider world of OT and energy which allow for networking with people from all over the world.

Great support from management to progress and upskill within your area. Good opportunities to progress or move roles in any business area. Good job satisfaction as you know your impact on the network to achieve NetZero.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to SSE?
Do research into the business are you are applying for. Do you know the difference or interactions between OT and IT? Experience with similar systems can go a long way.
