Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Setting up CNC machines, tools and materials to manufacture components according to engineering drawings and accurate tolerances.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I feel the programme is very enjoyable, hands on, and I learn new things every day in a structured environment. I also feel that I am producing good work that can actually be used by the fitters in projects.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt how to use coding and programming languages to create complex programs for the CNC machine to follow when creating components. I have also learnt about AutoCAD, following drawings, filing, manual machining, tooling and business improvement.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
On the company side, extremely well organised. I have an allocated advisor, occupational health input, a specific placement in the workshop with a supportive manager and experienced mentor. I also have one day a week in college with two allocated staff and a year planner of units.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
So much support, it’s amazing. I have open communication with my advisor, help from occupational health, input with the employee-led networks. They also give support to enable me to take advantage of opportunities, such as working at careers fairs and supporting at events.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
We have one day a week in college, with two tutors. They are very supportive, quick to explain more in detail if needed, will revisit subjects to refresh and structure the lesson plan well. The pastoral support is super too.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I had never considered CNC machining specifically before Babcock offered it, and the first year gave me a real handle on the basics of how this particular type of machining works. This meant I could hit the ground running in the second year.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Babcock has employee-led networks, such as Pride, BAME, and Young Professionals networks to name a few. There is also a sports and social club on site. We also have opportunities to attend events. For example I networked at a Parliament event and volunteered at rugby at Twickenham.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Babcock International Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Very well supported, well paid, good benefits and health care on site. Everyone is respectful and it creates a super atmosphere for working.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Babcock International Group?
Make progress with maths! Level 3 includes complex things such as logarithms and calculus. I started brushing up on maths 4 months before my first year.
