I am an Assistant QS working on the Transpennine Route Upgrade. I complete subcontract management, from the procurement to to the final account including setting up the order and completing interim payments. I complete forecasting and cost reporting on a few of the smaller projects to show the commercial status. I complete reviews of drawings with the aid of the delivery team.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I think it is very hard to complete an apprenticeship. A lot comes with it. As you move up in the program work are more reliant on you as well as the uni work becoming harder. There is also the requirement to become professionally credited. Although I do enjoy it all it is a lot of pressure.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

People skills are a big part of my job. You have to liaise with the teams to gain all relevant information from all required parties.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The scheme is well organised, each apprenticeship will attend college at the required time and attend their own project between. I like that BAM is set up to complete week release which means you are focus on uni at uni.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

All dependent on your line manager I have a good line manager that helps.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Leeds college of Building is a really good college that has supported us the whole way. they are interactive and always willing t help, even between when we are at uni and work. They help us with the qualifications and towards being professionally credited.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Most of the things we study are relevant to work and have helped you know and complete works. They have given many skills that we need to be a QS, they have helped provide the foundation for work to develop them.

Would you recommend BAM to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It is a good company with quite a few perks, they have a good holiday allowance. Many peopel i work with will do anything to help each other out.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
Explains what generic skills you have and how you have obtained them - when starting work they will be able to use that foundation to develop them.
