Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I work in personal injury and I assist Claimants with getting compensation following accidents. My day to day job involves communicating with clients, instructing experts, working with barristers, valuing cases and calculating settlements. I work in a big team and work with all colleagues on a variety of different cases from accidents at work, road traffic collisions, public liability accidents. Our clients have also sustained multiple different injuries including spinal cord, brain injuries, multiple orthopaedic, etc.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy the work I do and the apprenticeship programme. My day to day job varies depending on case and what I have in the diary for that day and I really enjoy the fact that no two days are the same. My apprenticeship has also given me the opportunity to learn the law at the time in which I am applying the law in the real world and, for me personally, that is the best way I learn.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have improved my own confidence on a professional and personal level. I feel more confident when speaking to clients or defendants in a case, as well as more confident in my own ability to do the job. In turn, this has increased my confidence outside of work too. I believe my listening and communication skills have also developed a lot.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The programme itself is very well structured and it is clear exactly what the work is and when it needs to be done by. This can vary depending on the individual apprentice but this is always discussed when necessary. Overall, the programme is easy to follow and makes the whole process easier for the apprentice.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My employer is incredibly supportive of my apprenticeship. They always allow me time to complete my apprenticeship work and are very understanding of my position. I was allowed one study day per week, as agreed by my employer, and this was invaluable for me. Overall, my employer has been amazing.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
During my course and when I was working towards qualification, I received a lot of support from my training provider. They always checked in on me and did wellbeing checks and ensured I was coping ok and was on track with my work. They also supported me when it came to completing work and ensuring it was all to a high standard.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I think my qualification and the study work has helped me in my job role, to some extent, as it has allowed me to learn the law and apply it in practice at the same time, and for me personally, that is how I learn best. However, the thing that has helped me the most is the fact I was able to do my day job surrounded by people who have been in the industry for years and learn from them.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are a number of extra curricular activities to get involved in at work. There are multiple sports teams, social events and work and with external companies, we do a lot of business development activities which allows me to meet a lot of new people. Generally, there are lots of things outside work that I can get involved in.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Irwin Mitchell to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Irwin Mitchell is a really great place to work. Everyone is incredibly friendly and supportive and they just want the best for you. I have received a lot of positive feedback from my line manager and my colleagues and it is great working with and learning from all of them. Irwin Mitchell is a really great firm.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Irwin Mitchell?
Everyone in the legal industry has good grades and so, to stand out, you have to show your other skills that will help you in the work place. It is important to be good at your job but you have to have the people skills and the professionalism as well that help progress your legal career. Irwin Mitchell focus a lot on the type of people they hire in terms of personality and don't just look at grades.
