Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Refurbishing and overhauling train components
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I enjoy the on the job training that is carried out on site in Acton. I think that the my experience with conel college could have been better though. Unfortunately tfl continue to use them for training.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes, I have learnt how to effectively use a wide array of tools and machinery. I have also learnt about how to read technical drawings properly and manufacture something by using the information on them.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
Similar to the previous answer, anything that has taken place on site at the tfl workshop in Acton Town has been brilliant. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about the college of north east London which seems to really struggle with effective structure. Always changing the timetable.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My employer gives me all the support i need
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
The college has done enough to let me at least pass and get the needed modules completed. There are often days when no work is done because they don’t have an available classroom or tutor.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
The hand skill learnt at the beginning have been very useful in my day to day role
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes there are. I don’t know if they are official tfl teams but there are plenty of opportunities to network on the internal forums.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Transport for London to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The job opportunity and career at the end is worth the sub par college experience as tfl is a good company to work for and has great benefits
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Transport for London?
I don’t have any particular advice. All I can add is that I had no prior engineering experience when I applied so it’s worth applying even if you don’t feel qualified as they teach you everything you need.
