Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Assistant manager. So I coach shift managers, look after the P and L daily e.g. labour and food cost. I complete the crew schedule and am in charge of discipline. I also manage metrics like customer experience times and have gained a lot of experience dealing with customer complaints and conflict within the restaurant.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
It can be stressful at times. I find that distance learning is difficult and most definitely don’t get all of the off-the-job that you are promised. It is rewarding when you complete an assignment and there is lots of help and guidance out there, especially during your first year.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes. Managing people, time management, confidence building, how to motivate others and motivate myself. Understand the P&L more and what goes into the daily running of a business. I have also learnt about motivational theories and why we do certain things, it has been good to learn about things that take companies to the next level e.g digital technologies.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
All units are structured the same which is great. It is organised well but sometimes as a class can find ourselves bored as we get taught the same thing by different people sometimes e.g I have been taught how to write a report 4 times and it’s been pointless.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
2/5
I do not get that much from my employer. I find that I have to ask for my university days quite often and am left to feel like I am a burden for asking for them. It can lead to uncomfortable conversations with the business manager sometimes.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
I get a good amount of support from both the tutors and my study skills coach. My study skills coach has been amazing at giving me the confidence I need to move forward and improve my grades. I find that not all tutors are useful and some take ages to reply to emails but most are great.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I definitely feel like the new roles and skills help to teach me not only about the organisation and processes but also helps me learn more about myself and how I can be a better manager and get better results from the restaurant. It has definitely helped me within my role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
Sometimes we have crew parties (normally yearly). We also have a managers meal coming up (also an annual occurrence).
