Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I work as a software engineer, building and maintaining the back end systems that power the Met Office website and mobile app.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
Working with the Met Office is great fun and incredibly satisfying, easily the best part of the programme. I often found myself disappointed by the University of Exeter, which somewhat soured the overall experience.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Greatly developing my programming and presentation skills, as well as developed my communication and management skills.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The Met Office handled all aspects of my programme fantastically. The University of Exeter frequently seemed to be disorganised or not know what they were doing.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
The Met Office were always ready and willing to provide whatever support I needed, from academic studies to home life and mental well being.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
Certain modules were more well supported than others, but often it felt like the University of Exeter wasn't trying to provide support, or was doing a very poor job of it.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
The qualification lacks the practical experience required to truly support my day to day role, though some of theoretical knowledge provided as helped to solidify the tasks I perform in my role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are a large variety of extra-curricular activities available at the Met Office, such as clubs, groups, events, and teams. However the affects of COVID on networking activities are still being experienced.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Met Office to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Everyone here is incredibly friendly. It is a great place to begin your career.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Met Office?
Although the pay may be lower than other organisations or businesses, it is a great place to work that offers lots of opportunities for improving your skills and abilities.
