Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
A DevOps Engineer Apprentice supports the delivery and maintenance of software systems by learning how to streamline development, deployment, and operations processes. The role typically involves working with automation tools, cloud platforms, CI/CD pipelines, and monitoring systems while collaborating closely with developers and IT teams. Apprentices build foundational skills in infrastructure management, scripting, version control, and problem‑solving to help improve reliability, efficiency, and scalability across the software lifecycle.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I've been enjoying the programme a lot, since I get the opportunity to learn the theoretical side wit the apprenticeship provider and put it into practice in my role at the met office.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have developed many different skills since the start of the apprenticeship. I have learned about software development lifecycle and what it involves. I also learned coding fundamentals, linux, git, ci/cd and other tools we use in the team.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The program is well organised. I do the online lessons on the apprenticeship provider's platform, then I have live sessions about the same project, and finally have the chance to apply what I have learned at work, where I have real tasks to complete and deliver a project to be evaluated.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My employer is really supportive and flexible. Whenever I need more time to focus on a specific task they are always very understanding and ready to help.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
The training provider is also very helpful and always gives me feedback on what I am doing right and the tings I need to improve.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The subjects I am studying are closely related to the work I do at the met office, and the live sessions have great teachers that explain all the topics really well.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
The are plenty of extra-curricular activities at work. At the moment I haven't joined any due to my current schedule, but there are many options to choose from.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Met Office to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It is a great place to work since everyone is really friendly and ready to help. The flexibility is really good as well and you don't feel pressured all the time to deliver work. Being able to mainly work from home is definitely a plus, but getting together with colleagues in the office is also essential to have a strong team and to help with mental health issues. The most important thing I would say is the work we do and what it means to work at the met office. We actually make a difference in the future of the country.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Met Office?
Understand their values and mission, use structured methods for interviews (STAR), leverage work experience and learning opportunities. Also explore their early careers pathways
