Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role on a day to day basis is normally making the starters and desserts which come through on the tickets however since turning 18 I have been on mains a lot more as I’m now able to use the grill so am being grill trained.
If I am working a closing shift the role involves clearing down surfaces making sure everything is lidded clearing the floors

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy the apprenticeship program I am on to a high extent as I’m able to develop on current skills and learn new skills every shift I’ve worked.
However there were a few problems with getting an apprenticeship coach in my 6 months here I’ve already had 4

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Yes, I have been able to develop on my existing skills, as well as having the opportunity to learn new skills. A lot of the skills I have learnt are relevant to the kitchen of the business as a whole, however I have learnt life skills as well as this

How well organised/structured is your programme?

My apprenticeship program is structured really well on terms of Marston’s part. I get given a lot of advice for the kitchen and get taught key skills for example knife skills and how to safely use equipment.
However from the apprenticeship coaches side and the company that provides this i believe it isn’t structured too well, I’ve had more coaches than visits or meetings with them. A lot of the program is aimed towards working within a restaurant kitchen and environment.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

I believe I get quite a bit of support from my employer. For example if I’m unsure on anything I’m just able to ask and I get the help I need. When it comes to my online work for my apprenticeship if I’m confused on a section or don’t know how to answer the question with the correct detail the kitchen managers explain the question to me and help me understand
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

At the start of my apprenticeship I had a coach who was helpful and would help with my learning and I was able to contact when I was unsure on any of my work. However since then I’ve had 3 different coaches. I’ve had my last coach for about a month now and I haven’t been contacted by them or had a meeting to meet them and see how my learning is going; all I get was an email from my old coach saying I had a new one and got told their name.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I think that parts of my training provided by lifetime training has been useful and helps me person better in my role in the kitchen however other part of it don’t for example there are quite a lot of sections just based on working in a restaurant kitchen and how to make cakes and pastries and I had to make some myself to have completed this task, which I don’t mind however we don’t make cakes in the kitchen at work and a lot of the information isn’t relevant to my job role at all

I would recommend Marston’s to a friend as I believe that they are good with their employees and it is a great place to work to gain experience and be able to move up in your role
