Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

As an audit trainee I help complete certain areas of the audit file, being trained to examine and test different areas of the financial statements and test them using tools such as Excel and APT. I also go to stock counts where i check stores are correctly recording their stock and i may work on client site or in office.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy my programme as i get to learn while on the job, the infrastructure is good but what really makes it is the norwich base. They are great at cultivating and teaching and help you become a better auditor, interested in reaching targets while also seeing the value in long term investment in staff wellbeing and understanding

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I've learnt a lot about how to learn whilst producing work rather than learning all aspects first, helping me to identify relevant areas where there are gaps in knowledge which are necessary to complete the task. I have also developed my ability to time manage and ensure i communicate well with team to help them have an accurate understanding of where the audit is on a regular basis.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

The base i am in for my company in particular is incredibly supportive. The centralised support can be unclear and i have found myself unsure of what is happening regarding my qualification. However my local team have had sessions to cover the content and that has been helpful. The information received was not always accurate.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification is useful in introducing a lot of terminology and background however because of the intensity of the exams, the way in which we are assessed doesn't lend itself to long term remembering of content. The modules do build on one another which does help with recall, however as most content is not utilised regularly on jobs, the knowledge can be lost.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

We as a branch go to socials together and there is a more structured socials team which is joint with another branch of the firm which also organises social activities, we do perhaps a social every other month. They vary in terms of what we do, often decided by the whole office, usually going to different places within the town.

Would you recommend BDO to a friend?

Why?
I would recommend my firms base because people take the time to invest and help you to grow an understand the work. There is plenty opportunity's for growth and development career wise. The pay and work life balance is good although dependent on branch the work life balance may differ.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BDO?
Focus on clear and prompt communication, making notes of areas when you cover them so you can go back to them when covering the area again. When applying try to convey that you can communicate well with others, have an interest in the company and understand the qualifications and what a day to day workload may consist of.
