Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I am an apprentice maintenance engineer which involves looking after the running of the building and its plant. Providing fixes for issues or calling in contractors if needed to sort out any issues that may occur. As an apprentice my chances are limited but I am able to watch and shadow my colleagues.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy the college learning side of the program as the topics and subjects are interesting and useful to know. However , I do find that it doesn’t relate much to what I do on a day to day basis and sometimes the work can be reactive rather than proactive. So, it can be busy but sometimes very quiet which isn’t suited to me.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learned about the workings and common faults that can occur on a number of different mechanical or electrical systems. I have learnt communication skills by having to deal with my types of people within my role. Problem solving also is a a tool needed to be able to diagnose potential causes for issues.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

The first year at college was well organised and delivered. Then on the second year moving into the work place again my am manager and team have sorted that out very well. The second year at college however as been disappointing due to the college not having replaced lost teaching staff adequately and this has impacted the delivery of the course.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

My line manager is always available at the other end or the phone or via email. He also visits site when possible. My team on site also are there to offer any support or advice needed. However, I am diagnosed ADHD and I don’t think I receive the proper support from college and work in this aspect. More could be done.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

In college the support from the the main tutors, these being the ones that are considered to be very good at their jobs. They do offer a lot of support but due to loss of staff this year hasn’t been as good as the first and again I receive little to no support for my ADHD.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I feel it offers the chance to practice discipline and learning new information. But, as previously stated the course curriculum isn’t relevant to my job as the role isn’t as hands on as the course is. This means that I enjoy learning the subjects but rarely use them in practice which is a shame.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are none currently as my team doesn’t do any sports or things like this. But I would be up for it. As I play alot of sports outside of work. Including 5 a side football and golf. This is something that could be improved. Again I would be open to.

Yes
Why?
It is a big company with lots of opportunities available within for change and growth once you are here. If you don’t like what you are doing currently they will be able to offer you another role to try. Plus it has been a good friendly environment to work in so far.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to CBRE Group?
Be honest with how you see things going and don’t be afraid to try different roles and speak up for your self if you feel things aren’t going as you would like. But also have an open mind and give things a proper go before you decide things aren’t for you.
