Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role involves working on projects within the team (ranging from a few weeks to a few months). This involves the development of new programs, maintenance of existing programs by fixing defects and testing changes. Then supporting them all the way through to release into live. It also includes supporting other apprentices on the team.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy the programme a lot, the organisation give enough time and support for university work. The work that I complete is varied and although projects can be quite long, each day is different. The people within the organisation are fantastic as well.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt how to develop COBOL, Rexx and JCL code in addition to developing existing skills with languages including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Development of Java skills will be starting soon. In terms of soft skills communication, collaboration and business professionalism have all been developed as a result of the apprenticeship.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

Well organised with most communications being sent out in a timely manner and clear communication regarding any delays. Student reps for each pathway to ensure that there is a point of contact for people to raise any concerns they may have regarding tutors, marking standards etc. All university staff quick to answer queries.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Time given to spend on University assignments, support given for work and support if any personal issues encountered. e.g. loss of a family member. There is a clear support network available to apprentices to use if needed that can support with work, university or any other issues; called BeWell.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

As a fourth year, I receive 2 days a week to use on my work-based university project. This was originally one day a week while I was still attending university to complete my final unit but once that ended it was re-assigned to be allocated towards the project instead of attending University lectures.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Earlier years were more academic than later years, with units still being specific to the job role. Later years have two work based projects so they link directly to performing better within my role. These are projects that deliver a direct benefit to the team with the product produced by it.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There were a range of activities pre-pandemic, but now the office is undergoing extensive renovation and re-building so opportunities are less regular than they used to be. Social activities depend on your team. On my team there are not many to participate in, but I know that other teams hold monthly social events for the wider department that the fit under.

Would you recommend Barclays to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Lots of support available, good pay with clear opportunities for progression outside of the apprenticeship. Opportunities for citizenship events in the local area and opportunities to attend conferences and network within the wider business area in addition to opportunities to visit schools, job fairs etc. and raise awareness of the apprenticeship and apprenticeships in general.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Barclays?
Be yourself throughout the application process, there is a huge range of people working for Barclays and the best way to sell yourself is to be honest and open. Get some experience of working as a team because teamwork is key. Being a clear communicator helps to ensure that you are able to sell yourself.
