Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

As apart of the Technical software team I work with a range of technical (engineering) software used by the engineers. This includes but is not limited to maintenance, rollouts and licensing on these software. I also create documentation as and when needed. I also work on tickets where I assist users when they have issues with the software my team support. This involves specialised and technical knowledge, only we can provide. On a daily basis I will interact with my team as well as the Global software team to ensure all is running smoothly and if there are any software needing maintenance or rollouts. Some projects I have worked on are new forms and collaborations with the cybersecurity team.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I thoroughly enjoy my programme with Arup. They are so keen and helpful to develop apprentices as they view apprentices as the future. They see you as part of a long term role in the workplace and do their best to accommodate you and develop you whenever they can. They offer great progression too.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt a bunch of new skills as well as developing existing ones. Some new skills I have learnt involve increasing my technical knowledge, whether this is troubleshooting or scripting. With my apprenticeship I am learning all the time and picking up different skills. I have been able to develop my interpersonal skills as well as time planning, problem solving and communication skills.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

Firebrand can be very unprepared and will not communicate well with me sometimes. Often leaving me in a lurch and tight deadlines, however Arup / my team are very helpful. They chase up my mentor, are actively ensuring I am engaged and challenged. Seeing what work I can do for some of my projects and how to hit criteria.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

My employer is extremely helpful. They are so supportive in the sense that if I have personal circumstances they are very understanding and will offer any support where they can to ensure that I am well and can work at a high level too. They allow me to collaborate with other teams to see where I can fit in and work best. As well as where I enjoy working most.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

My training provider can be quite unprepared and does not communicate all changes sometimes. There have been a few moments where I have had to chase up for answers or have to do things by myself. The training centres are a pelt of information that is taught ineffectively despite having great instructors. They can definitely offer a better range of resources and make it more engaging.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My qualifications will offer me background knowledge that I can apply in my day to day role. It also provides me with the opportunity to collaborate with other teams showing me an insight as to what type of work I enjoy most and pursue those routes in the future. It has provided me with a lot of opportunities.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are constantly a range of events being put on at work. These include social activities like quizzes and sports days. They also host some sporting events too. At my work, I am a part of a women in tech community which host professional networking events with women in the company from all around the world coming to these funded and expensed events. I am also a part of the Islamic society which is nice as it surrounds me with more people who look like me. As well as Connect events which allow people of different backgrounds and groups to hold inclusive discussions.

Why?
They offer great salaries, amazing opportunities for growth, great benefits and help optimise a work-life balance. They host good social events and the working atmosphere is great. The new office is specifically designed to facilitate a good natural working environment. They offer so much support to you through different avenues and resources.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Arup?
When applying to Arup be interesting and diverse in your application. Have a neat and tidy CV. Show your personality off when you can, as they love interesting characters. Embrace your differences and ensure you stand out. With your application you should aim to show a good range of your personality. Experience os always good but a willingness to work hard and learn will always be best.
