Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Assisting with BIM related project work within the Structures team in Manchester. Everything from information model coordination to project management. Day-to day could involve working with architects, external parties and clients to problem solve, complete BIM tasks, manage issues and deadlines and pushing internal research. It also includes some of the mode traditional technician duties, looking after models and managing all associated information.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The variation of different projects, wildly different day-to -day tasks and a combination of other opportunities like site visits, assignments and office visits make it a very enjoyable apprenticeship. It can be demanding at times balancing learning and work but nothing that cannot be managed effectively. Overall a great experience.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Everything I have learnt so far has been new learning and recorded on continuous personal development logs. Starting with various specific BIM training courses, LinkedIn learning opportunities alongside on the job learning, I am surrounded by some extremely skilled professionals who are on hand to support and develop my learning.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

I was pleasantly surprised at the level of structure in something that was completely new to the company. Being the first to undertake this apprenticeship in the group has meant a close relationship with those planning the structure and progression with opportunity to provide feedback and push for more opportunities.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Between my mentor, line manager and training officer, the team is always on hand to advise, direct and review any queries. I am also fortunate to be around a wider structural engineering team that directly and indirectly support me through management. Everyone I have interacted with has been willing to support where needed.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
I am currently entering the preparation phase for the end-point-assessment for which my training provider has supported me with research and supported my knowledge of requirements.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

While I have not completed the apprenticeship just yet, the qualification I am working towards will act as a first step on the career ladder with degrees and international assignments on the cards upon completion. I am also in the process of completing my Eng-tech application which is a sought after accreditation of engineering technician quality.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are always social events, be it in the office or elsewhere with weekly sporting events optional for all employees including football, golf, badminton, squash and everything in-between. I also attend quarterly team socials where the closer team can get together and evaluate the last period, handing out awards and sharing experiences.

Would you recommend Arup to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The people. By far the best group of people I have ever worked with. Even attending office visits globally, everyone I meet has been a pleasure to work with. Credit goes to the support for early careers too, with an ever increasing intake of graduates and apprentices each year. The programme is continuously improving.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Arup?
Just bring your true self. We push at Arup to bring yourself to work, the actual demonstrating your values and how they align with those of the company will support your application. The only advice I can pass on would be to talk about a longer career plan than just the current role.
