Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I am a Civil Engineering Technician apprentice and I predominantly work with drawing production and modelling. When working in the office I usually start by catching up with my manager about the tasks ahead. When working from home I will coordinate with my manager over Teams. My daily tasks mainly consist of modelling and setting up/producing and reviewing drawings.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy my apprenticeship. There is alot of flexibillity like working from home and flexible hours which is really beneficial, there is also opportunity for overtime which is great. I always look forward to work and the weekends seem to come around quickly. There is a great atmosphere in the office.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
My communication skills have improved and I have gained a deeper understanding of the industry. I have also become proficient in a range of software like microstation, autocad, projectwise and office 365. There are lots of opportunities to learn and there is a broad range of software and courses availabe.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My programme is well structured. I go to college every tuesday and there is opportunity for study leave if needed. When I am working, there is always an abundance of work and when you get light someone will always be there to help find or give you another task. You can also ask to work in different areas to develop new skills or get insight into the different teams/roles.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Arup is a very supportive employer. There are many benefits to working with them and they are always open to ways to improve their early careers experience. There is opportunity for study leave when needed and they are always happy to help if you have problems with your course or even transport.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive great support towards my qualification. Previous apprentices offer help and walk you through things if you are struggling. I can ask for study leave if I need it which is really useful when there are big deadlines. Everyone is always happy to help where they can and can offer insight into projects and assignments.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
My qualification provides the industry knowledge that is the basis of my work. It helps me gain an understanding of why I am doing things. As well as industry knowledge, it also covers different areas like project management which I would otherwise not experience without asking specifically to shadow someone.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are always things to do outside of work. There are a wide variety of sports teams and groups that meet on a regular basis like football, rugby, badminton and many more. There are always activities and experiences with project closes and team events also. Some teams also hold weekends away and activity days.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Arup to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Arup is an excellent employer and is very supportive. The atmosphere in the office is great and there is always something you can join in on to get to know others better. There are many opportunities to learn new things and software. There are lots of benefits like employee pricing, private healthcare and profit share.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Arup?
Relax and be yourself, the interviewers are friendly and will give you time to answer. They will not expect you to have extensive industry knowledge when applying for an apprenticeship. Try to ask questions, they are always interested to see that you are engaged and it is worth making sure you have all the information you can get.
