Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Primarily the technical side of acoustics, in the form of collecting and processing data, such as regular site surveys and the writing up of subsequent reports. Developing skills in noise modelling techniques. Working on building projects, performing mechanical and ventilation calculations, noise break-in/out calculations. Internal research projects.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
The programme is very interesting and rewarding. At times, the amount of information can seem overwhelming as it is a completely new field, however my colleagues are very supportive and happy to assist!

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Among many other skills, I am developing a technical knowledge of acoustic equipment, manufacturer acoustic materials, key acoustic principles such as noise propagation in different contexts, building and auditorium acoustics, noise modelling techniques, report writing, effective communication.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
I particularly enjoy the balance of 4 days in the office and 1 day studying. I find the office time the most beneficial, as you learn on the job and acquire context for the study day. This is the first year of the programme, so the course is flexible.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I feel very supported from my employer. There are multiple learning resources options, supportive colleagues, and a my line manager helps steer my development.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
During the study day, I am able to get the most out of the training staff who are very knowledgeable and supportive, particularly the acoustics department.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
The qualification is a hybrid between acoustics and building services, so provides me with job-specific information and a wider context for the built environment, and the process of a buildings life cycle.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are multiple sport teams in Arup, and our team regular organises social events.
