My role as a Cyber Security Apprentice at BT is to support the business in cyber operations and secure software development. I work on code projects, usually in Java or Python to support cyber platforms used by BT, such as McAfee ESM (SIEM).
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy my apprenticeship. I have learnt a range of new skills in technology through my rotations and university work. For the most part, the atmosphere and people are great. Rotations can vary in terms of relevance to qualification and quantity of work available for apprentices.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The cyber security apprentice programme in Ipswich started in September 2021, hiring 5 apprentices including myself. There was a lack of organisation/structure.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

From my experience, there is not a-lot of support from line managers.
However, mentors/friends/colleagues in rotation teams are highly supportive and have helped me progress my skills throughout my apprenticeship.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Staffordshire University assigns an academic mentor for each student. There are regular meetings and paperwork to do, which tracks progress. There is lots of support.

The qualification I do at university is relevant and supports my work in my current rotation. Both are relevant to cyber security and secure development.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are opportunities to promote the BT apprenticeship scheme in events and key dates such as National Apprenticeship Week. Social activities exist for graduates, but are still being set up for apprentices. I am looking forward to getting involved in this.
