Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
My day to day role includes shadowing an engineer while he completes day to day tasks and reactive tasks that are set out in our contract, dealing with electrics, plumbing, heating ventilation and air conditioning and mechanical from offices to pool plant rooms. I even have some ppm of my own to carry out.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I enjoy it a lot, I enjoy being hands on and knowledgeable and when maintaining machinery and systems this is applicable.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
I started with absolutely 0 experience and knowledge so everything I’ve learnt so far is new. I’ve expanded my knowledge across multiple trades and expertise but as it is only my first year, not so in-depth. Mainly in electrics. And from the college side, I’ve learnt from that as well.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
I have experienced many problems, my college course was delayed as my original course took too long to apply so was full and took a while to find another course, and even with this college I have my difficulties as there is poor communication. But on site itself, there is great organisation and structure for me to learn.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
My employer is great in support, always willing to talk to me and help when needed and will invest into me for training, tools and PPE to ensure I’m getting treated as well as possible so I can learn and grow.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
1/5
Not a lot, this is a huge problem. The tutors aren’t ranged enough to teach all subjects (I’ve been told this is being sorted) and my NVQ assessor quit without me receiving any information about what is happening next. However, my tutors themselves work very hard to help me get through.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I feel it covers a good range and will help me later down the line, but at the moment in just the first year, I have yet to start the Level 3 where I will specialise in electrical. There are a few great pathways after the course like further training or doing a HNC and HND.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
On my first day, I was invited up to the head offices and was given an introduction on the company’s morals and values, there are also many trips, however they don’t suit and fit my schedule.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Skanska to a friend?
Yes
Why?
A great opportunity to learn, get paid and experience the real world all while getting the job security that comes at the end and a chance to progress in your career. Also the company are very helpful with opportunities to keep growing, so are worth working for to maximise your potential.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Skanska?
I would advise to come in with an open mindset as I’m sure every site is different and everyone’s experience is different, but the most important thing to remember is to not be scared to communicate and ask questions or you’ll never learn and grow your confidence.
