Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am an apprentice/assistant cost consultant working on various concurrent projects across several Greater Boroughs of London. My role includes different aspects of quantity surveying, specifically focusing on cost planning/estimating for upcoming construction projects, as well as different surveying services such as valuations. A typical day in my role would vary depending on the work which I have set, however it could vary from going to site, or coming into the office and carrying out different tasks on projects which I am allocated on, as well as helping others in my team. For example, one day I could be measuring quantities from a drawing, on another day I could be in meetings discussing variations which are to be agreed for a project.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I enjoy the programme to a very large extent. The apprenticeship with Mace has exceeded my expectations and I love the work environment which Mace provides to me as an apprentice. Furthermore, I also enjoy studying for my degree at London South Bank University and overall have been very happy with the programme in terms of both work and training.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I certainly have learnt new skills as well as built existing ones. For example, my communication skills have increased exponentially, as the role has exposed me to an environment where communication with others around me have a massive impact, which has positively challenged me to communicate more effectively. Furthermore, I have learnt new skills such as Excel. Before joining, I only had very brief experience with Excel and could only use it primitively, however I now feel comfortable with opening and using it in different scenarios and I have become fairly proficient at it.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
I think the programme is very structured in my opinion. Mace has made a clear effort to streamline the apprenticeship process/programme to make it as easy as possible for apprentices to become trained and attain different qualifications while learning at work and becoming proficient in their role. Furthermore, the Apprentice Emerging Talent Team is very helpful and welcoming when it comes to asking questions about the company, apprenticeship, or just general queries.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive satisfactory support from Mace and have always felt that I am supported in any realm when it comes to my apprenticeship. Mace allows me to always ensure my workload is appropriate and well balanced between work and uni, so therefore I feel like I am properly supported at Mace.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive satisfactory support from my training provider when working towards my qualification. London South Bank university always ensures that there are people who can be easily accessed and contacted, if I have a query about my course or the qualifications. Furthermore, the lecturers are very helpful and always support me.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I feel my qualification is crucial to helping me with my role. For example, I am studying Quantity Surveying at London South Bank University and the modules which I am studying directly reflect my job and allow me to progress quicker within my role at Mace.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are many extra curricular activities which Mace hosts on a regular basis, for example they host several volunteering opportunities for anyone at Mace to take part in as well regular professional networking events which you can attend. Also, Mace host sporting events such as 5 a-side football.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Mace to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend Mace to a friend as I believe they are outstanding in the programme they deliver and the work which I do is engaging and I feel a purpose for why I am doing it. Furthermore, they also partner with some of the best training providers, which is why overall I would definitely recommend them.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mace?
I would give the advice to just be yourself in interviews, no one from Mace will judge you and they understand as an apprentice who is applying. You may be nervous and have never had an interview. Also, learn about Mace and its values and show your interest in the company and why you want to work for them.
