Overview of the Experience

Please give an overview of what your work experience involved:
4/5
It involved two meetings with my supervisor, a welcome and farewell session and various sessions about different areas of law. This included contract/street law, jaffa cake debate-style session, construction law, employee misconduct, three separate sessions regarding the entry into a legal career in Scotland, England, and Northern Ireland.
To what extent did you enjoy your work experience?
4/5
To a large extent, I enjoyed the experience. Although, I wish I could have explored areas of law that I really enjoy, such as criminal law. Often, the work experience focused on areas that did not really interest me, like construction law. However, I thoroughly enjoyed learning about contract law and employee misconduct.
How well organised was your work experience?
5/5
Very well organised. I was able to access the schedule of the entire programme beforehand, and I could click on the links to the Zoom meeting provided with ease. There was a chat function for me to interact with my peers and if i came across any issues, I had no problem emailing Pinsent Masons.
How much did your work experience help you in deciding on your future career path?
1/5
Honestly, not much. From the beginning, I had a clear idea on what I wanted to become-- I knew I wanted to enter into the legal profession. However, Pinsent Masons did provide with a plethora of information and guidance on how to navigate a legal career. I got to hear the backstories of many solicitors.
Were you paid or reimbursed for this experience?
1/5
No, I was not paid, it was a free work experience placement.

Skills Development

What training and skills development did you learn from your work experience?
4/5
I learned about the various pathways into law ranging from an apprenticeship to the traditional university degree. I also learned more about the GDL/ conversion course into law. I now know that I can pursue alternative interests at university level and convert to a standard law degree. I improved my debating skills with the use of the debate-like discussions I engaged in.

Company Culture

How much did you learn about the company culture and what it would be like to work there?
4/5
I learned a lot from the panelists personal backstory and their experience working at or with Pinsent Masons. I got to hear from clients, trainee solicitors, and even, senior associates in the commerical law firm. It gave me a taste of the types of people working at the law firm and their day-to-day business as solicitors.
Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees?
3/5
Yes there was. During one lunch, some solicitors stayed on the call to take any questions from the audience and provide more information on what it was they did.

Recommendations and Advice

Would you recommend Pinsent Masons LLP to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I really enjoyed my experience with this commercial law firm. It taught me a lot about the different entries into law and it helped spark my interest for different sectors of the law e.g. contract law/street law, and employee misconduct. I believe anyone with an ardent interest for the law would benefit from this programme.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Pinsent Masons LLP?
I would advice them to do their research about the commercial law firm and the kinds of companies and brands they collaborate with. It is important that the company you wish to work for align with your legal interests and personal beliefs. I would recommend this business to anyone wanting to explore the commercial side of law.
