Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

As a lab science apprentice I spend around 50% of my time in the lab and the other 50% in the office. I attend various project-related meetings to determine the current state of a project and to generate actions for members of the project team. I also often have my own experimental work going on which I plan and deliver.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really enjoy how every day is different in my team. There are new things happening everyday and it is exciting to learn how the team adapt and change to challenges and opportunities.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt various lab skills including aseptic manufacturing techniques and I have also developed professional skills such as cross-functional collaboration, time management and resilience which are all required to complete successful lab investigations.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

There is a clear structure to the programme which involves four days a week working and one day a week studying online for my degree.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

My manager supports me by regularly reviewing my development plan and working with me to ensure I have the opportunities to achieve all the knowledge, skills and behaviours necessary for my apprenticeship. I also have a mentor and a supervisor who support me with experimental work. There are many avenues of support including, the apprentice committee, the early careers team and your assigned apprentice buddy.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I have regular catch ups with my apprenticeship advisor where I can raise any issues and I can contact the module convenors with any questions about module content or assignments.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I study applied bioscience which enables a broader spectrum of learning compared to the more specific and tailored learning associated with my job role. I am able to get a wider view of bioscience and learn about topics such as microbiology which ties in very closely to my role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

The apprentice committee organise various events such as volunteering and charity events. The apprentice social society plan various social events inside and outside of working time including regular coffee mornings.

Why?
There is an incredible group of apprentices and a well established apprenticeship programme which is tailored to your needs and designed to allow you to reach your potential. I really truly enjoy my apprenticeship and working with incredible scientists everyday.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to AstraZeneca?
I would recommend doing a little bit of research before applying into an area of pharmaceutical science relevant to the role you are applying for that interests you.
