Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
My role is an assistant management accountant. I currently have a few regular month end tasks which involve posting and reviewing monthly accruals, reviewing the spend on various general ledgers, preparing the monthly management account pack and preparing various reconciliations as well as reviewing these. I also get involved in lots of miscellaneous projects and tasks.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I really enjoy studying alongside working. I love having something extra to work towards and focus on. I also really enjoy the balance of working four days, then having one day where I'm concentrating on developing my knowledge within the technical side of my qualification. I think it's the best way to learn.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have developed quite a few new skills since working at Irwin Mitchell. I have had my first proper, albeit brief, experience of being a line manager. I have mentored new starters before, but I was able to be the sole point of contact for a new apprentice within the team. I have also developed my communication skills, as I've sat in a lot more higher up meetings.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
My programme is relatively well structured. Since I take an exam every three months as part of ACCA, I know when to book onto modules, but I've found it quite hard choosing which optional modules to take and in what order, as there is not a lot of support for this.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
In terms of how Irwin Mitchell support with structuring the program, I think it works really well. They are extremely flexible in what days I need off in order to attend my courses and exams. As well as this, they are flexible when it comes to any admin work that needs completing.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
I am supposed to have a coach as part of my apprenticeship that has regular drop in calls, however I have only had two calls since starting my apprenticeship in late 2021, and these have been different people each time, so I do not have a point of contact at BPP and have struggled getting help when I've needed it.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I think it really helps develop the analytical side of my brain and apply this to my daily tasks at work. It also develops my technical knowledge in various areas, beyond my role, so I can better understand what other areas of finance do when interacting with them for my role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
We have regular social activities across the finance teams that everyone is welcome to be involved in, where we all meet up in teams and do various things such as quizzes or drinks. I am not aware of any sports teams or professional networking events that are available to us.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Irwin Mitchell to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The culture at Irwin Mitchell is by far the best out of any company I have previously worked for. There is such an inviting and friendly attitude about the place and people who work here. It makes it very easy to want to do a good job for the company.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Irwin Mitchell?
Be honest and open, be ready for challenge and be hungry for challenge. Show willingness and the want to be a part of a team. I think the team work aspect is really important, especially since not everyone works in office, it's important to have a good relationship with your team.
